Figuring out what average is with any given set of numbers regardless of size if relatively easy. Add all numerical values and then divide by the quanity of numerical values.
As an example:
There are 6 sticks ( individual stick sizes below )
1 stick is 1 inch long
1 stick is 2 inches long
1 stick is 3 inches long
1 stick is 4 inches long
1 stick is 5 inches long
1 stick is 6 inches long
Add all the lengths ( 1+2+3+4+5+6 = 21 )
Divide 21 by the number of total sticks (6)
Giving you the average stick size of 3.5 inches
This above example would also be called an average formula. ( OR Mean Formula ) “Total sum of the combined measurements divided by the total individual units of what is being measured equals the mean average.”
A couple of quick facts:
In mathmatical terms the “average” is reffered to as “the mean”.
